Africa has an important share of the global mineral resources and reserves, but it also suffers from a lack of resources like drinking water and other essential commodities. A Web-accessible GIS for geological composition, mineral resources and groundwater is essential for both investment and the development of geological resources, but is also required for land-use planning and sustainable environmental management policies. The main aim of the project AEGOS (African-European Georesources Observation System), supported by the European Union 7th Framework Programme, is to design a system that will enable the coherent development of infrastructure, knowledge, human resources, availability of information and data resources. One of the most important tasks of the AEGOS project is to design the technical architecture - the hardware, software and network necessary for future IT management so that the infrastructure for efficient delivery of data, information and services is guaranteed.
