Paper compares the results of laboratory tests on tensile strength of rocks carried out using two methods: a simple uniaxial tensile test and Brazilian test. Value of the tensile strength RR and shape of the fracture surface are analyzed. It is shown that the value of RR obtained in the Brazilian test is twice the value obtained in a simple tensile test in average. Reasons for this phenomenon are discussed. Research of fracture surface topography has shown that the samples fracture morphology obtained by a simple tensile test does not differ significantly from the morphology resulting from the Brazilian test. This suggests that the stress state in cross section, in which the fracture originates, is the same for both of these tests. Therefore the quantitative differences in RR values obtained are due to greater sensitivity of simple uniaxial tensile test to methodological errors. Therefore, the Brazilian test is suggested as a more appropriate test for determining the value of RR.
